The Uswat Welfare Trust is seeking to recruit an Imam to run the activities of the Mosque and Centre by engaging with the members with emphasis on Muslim youth and the wider community. Must have skills in the following areas:
- Have a strong understanding of Islam and Muslims
- Be a graduate in Islamic Sciences or related field
- Fluent in Yoruba, English and Arabic language
- And have at least two years’ experience of serving as an Imam
The role of Imam requires flexibility in working hours, and will include some weekends and bank holidays.
Any offer of employment will be subject to satisfactory enhanced DBS (formerly CRB) clearance and references.

IMAM POSITION DESCRIPTION
Position Summary:
Provide Islamic religious guidance, practices, and spiritual leadership to the congregation of Uswat Welfare Trust, in London, UK according to Allah’s revelations in the Holy Quran and the Sunnah of Prophet Mohammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him); establish and promote educational and extracurricular programs for adults and youth; lead the establishment of a unified Muslim community welcoming to all Muslims from different backgrounds and cultures; engage with the larger community to promote friendship and understanding between Muslims and non-Muslims in the community. The Imam reports to the Board of Trustees.
Required Qualifications in brief

• A degree in Islamic Studies or related field from an accredited educational institution.
• Ability to recite a large portion (if not all) of the entire Quran from memory.
• Fluency in English and Arabic (Spoken and written).
• Comprehensive knowledge of Islamic Shariah.
• Experience as an Imam.
• Ability to interact with and relate to all age groups especially, the youth.
• Ability to work with people of different cultures and backgrounds.
• Ability to teach.
• Demonstrated experience in conflict prevention and resolution.
• Demonstrated experience in Muslim family and youth counselling.
• Has a dynamic personality and is a motivational speaker.
• Experience in speaking with Non-Muslims about Islam.
Essential Responsibilities:
The Imam is expected to:
- Give the Khutbah (Arabic, Yoruba & English) and lead prayer for Jumu’ah and Eid Prayers except when there is a Guest Khatib agreed previously with the board of trustees. All Guest Khatibs must speak Yoruba, Arabic and English fluently so that there will be no need for anyone else to translate khutbah into either Yoruba, Arabic or English for them.
- Ensure that Friday khutbah contents reflect current issues affecting Muslims locally, nationally and globally.
- Lead all five daily congregational prayers. When unable to do so, request in advance one of the volunteer Imams approved by the board of trustees to lead. In exceptional circumstances where none of the volunteer Imams is available, use his best judgement to find a suitable replacement and inform the Board promptly.
- To organise ghusul, lead janazah prayers and make du’a at the cemetery.
- To conduct matrimonial services including Marriage (nikkah) and divorce (talaq).
- Offer families, youth, reverts counselling and guidance as needed.
- Provide Hadith studies, Seerah and Fiqh lessons, and other Islamic topics to increase knowledge and provide for spiritual growth of community members.
- To take the lead in organising Madrassa, leading to a recognised Islamic Institution.
- Participate in the community activities that further good interfaith and public relations for Islam and Muslims.
- Develop and implement educational and extracurricular programs for the youth.
- Work with Board of Trustees on fundraising programs for the community as and when needed.
- Plan Imam’s activities in consultation with the Board of Trustees.
- Provide advice and guidance to the Board on religious matters, community issues, and Mosque activities as and when required.
- Find, develop, nurse and encourage young Imams locally to lead prayers, give lectures and/or reminders from time to time.
- To provide pastoral care to the ill in hospital and at home, to counsel bereaved families and Muslim prisoners as and when required.
- To conduct reversions to Islam, organise follow ups and structured Islamic path to a good understanding of the faith.
General Responsibilities:
- Work approximately 40 hours per week.
- Maintain adequate records of activities undertaken in a log register on a daily basis for reviews as and when required by the board of trustees.
- Maintain publicised regular and convenient office hours at the Masjid for community members to seek religious counsel and guidance.
- Interact with all persons and organizations, Muslim and Non-Muslim, in a manner that reflects positively on Uswat Welfare Trust and Islam.
- Continually strive and conduct oneself in ways that foster unity and a sense of inclusion among all community members, and promote broad participation in Islamic and community activities.
- Lead by example to prevent discrimination on any basis including but not limited to school of thought, gender, race, nationality, racial origin, citizenship, political affiliation, or economic status.
- Conduct oneself in a manner that is respectful of the history and diversity of the Muslim community in London.
- Build and maintain regular contacts with the leadership of all masjids and Muslim organisations in London and suburb.
